Old No.9 Music Series
Songwriters Workshop

The Old No. 9 Road House is an educational facility for the arts located about 40 miles northwest of San Antonio near Comfort in the beautiful Texas Hill Country within walking distance of the Guadalupe River. Created as a rustic retreat for art related workshops, the Old No. 9 features classroom facilities, a covered stage for performance and bunkhouse-style accommodations for individuals or small groups.

The Old No. 9 Music Series Songwriter's Workshops have featured such great artists as Ray Wylie Hubbard, Gary Nicholson, Darden Smith and Terri Hendrix with Lloyd Maines and Peter Rowan. For more information about these artists, click on our Artists page. Songwriter's Workshops are limited to 25 participates and designed to offer students intensive and inspiring learning opportunities.  The Songwriters Workshop begins on Friday afternoon with student arrivals and meeting the artist. The students get to know each other quickly and begin playing their instruments and jamming as soon as they arrive. Supper is followed by a get to know you jam session around the campfire. Everyone participates. On Saturday the artist conducts morning and afternoon sessions on topics such as creative inspiration in songwriting, music creativity, instrument technique and performance. In addition information is provided about the business of publishing and producing in the music industry. After supper on Saturday, the artist gives a concert open to the public.

Sometimes the students have an opportunity to perform an opening show before the main concert. The Old No.9 Road House is well known for inspiring music well into the night, even to the break of dawn. So after the concert, songs continue to rise around the campfire “ till folks just can't play no more.” Sunday begins with brunch followed by the student concert, which is recorded for CD production. Goodbyes are hard; usually no one wants to leave. It is an incredible musical and experience.

The accommodations are rustic but charming. There are two dormitory style rooms each with a full bath, plus an additional full bath next to the kitchen. Some folks who really like it rustic bring their own tent. The meals are gourmet. Snacks are plentiful and the coffee and tea are always hot and the sodas cold.

The fee is variable but, covers all expenses, including tuition, a concert ticket, lodging, meals and snacks as well as a workshop T-shirt, one of the artist’s CDs and a copy of the student concert CD which will be featured on KFAN Texas Rebel Radio in the Old No.9 Music Hour. For students needing financial assistance in order to attend, we have a limited scholarship fund, which can be applied for by writing an essay on what music has meant to their life. The awards are generally in the amount of $100.00. But depending on circumstances it can be more or less.

The workshops are open to all levels of students from beginning songwriters and
musicians to those who have already produced a CD. The mix provides a rich and
supportive learning environment which is high in encouragement and low in competition.
